When Beberly joined LearnUp, she was in the 3rd grade and could only read simple one syllable words. She was struggling to learn English and had trouble keeping up in school. LearnUp first worked with her through our partnership with the Boys and Girls Clubs of San Francisco. Over a two year period, we worked off and on Beberly through the San Francisco Unified School District and in the 23-2024 school year through the Real Options for City Kids program at Visitacion Valley Elementary School. In this video, you’ll see the Arie grow in her reading in just four months of tutoring. Arie came to us when she was a 5th grader and was barely able to read simple one syllable words – meaning she was extremely behind.
But after working with her dedicated tutor, Arie is now sounding out words rather than guessing. She is now learning the skills to become a more fluent reader and is getting closer to this goal each and every day!
