Long track record of reading success
LearnUp is partnering with Steve Tattum, reading expert and the founder of the Tattum Reading Program, to deliver the LearnUp reading program. So while our nonprofit is new, our reading program is not.
Our program has a long track record of success and we are seeing great reading outcomes in our LearnUp students. Each LearnUp student is administered the nationally-normed Woodcock Reading Mastery Test (WRMT) before starting and at the end of the program. On average, students exiting the program gained over 1.1 grade levels in reading—in less than 60 hours of tutoring. Learn more here.
Steve Tattum explains the program
Steve talks with Dennis Whorley of THIS IS AMERICA & THE WORLD a weekly, international affairs television series, which is produced in Washington, New York City, and in countries around the world. The series is broadcast nationally on public television and PBS stations. At the time Steve was the program director for Denver Academy and his reading program was called F.A.S.T..
Steve explains how dyslexia functions in the brain and how our reading program addresses the four key components of resolving the reading struggles of kids who can’t read. This is an excellent overview of the issues facing kids living with dyslexia and other struggling readers and of our systematic, explicit instructional reading program.
Leading with books…
The LearnUp reading program is an integrated reading program, not a mastery phonics program. Many reading programs spend most of their time in phonics. In our program, the pace of learning is dictated by the books. We use books written by our reading director, Steve Tattum, to address a fundamental flaw in most reading programs — students need to practice their new reading concepts within a storybook environment. Each book is deliberately written to reinforce the program concepts taught during the student’s tutoring session. Our chapter books are filled with rich and interesting stories that capture the imagination but are written at a level that is accessible to the emerging reader. Leading with books sets our program apart from other reading programs.
From day one, all students are reading out of a book series written to appeal to their age. Just over half of each lesson is spent reading books and practicing new concepts. Daily reading allows the student’s vocabulary, syntax, and meaning to enhance student’s word attack, and reduce reversals and inverses. This approach leads to significant reading gains in less time.
All LearnUp reading programs are one-on-one tutoring sessions with highly trained reading tutors. Our reading tutors undergo an intensive training program to learn the approach, methodologies, and curriculum of our reading program. After the training, our tutors receive ongoing mentoring and professional development directly from Steve Tattum.
Program logistics and hours
- Each tutoring session is 55 minutes long. Students come daily. In addition, we expect each student to do 15 minutes a day reading out loud using a technique called ‘Pressure Release’ from a book with a parent or other significant adult. You can learn more about these techniques here.
- We tutor from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday.
- We operate year round and have ongoing enrollment.
- We tutor at the University of San Francisco School of Management and La Boulangerie de San Francisco corporate offices on Pine St. and Fillmore.
- We are exploring other locations in San Francisco , Marin, and the East Bay.
