LearnUp is a San Francisco-based nonprofit on a mission to teach all kids how to read. We teach struggling readers, with or without a diagnosis of dyslexia, to read at grade level and beyond in about half the time as most other major reading programs.
Why is La Boulangerie involved?
The owners of La Boulangerie bakeries, Pascal and Virginie Rigo, helped found LearnUp alongside our Executive Director Steve Hagler.
At the time, Pascal and Virginie’s son, Oscar, struggled to learn how to read for many years. The family went to several different reading programs, but Oscar’s reading did not improve. By 5th grade, Oscar was reading below the 3rd grade level.
That was until he was taught by Steve Tattum, the educator responsible for creating LearnUp’s unique curriculum and methodology. Oscar improved 3 grade levels in reading, reaching the high school reading level in less than a year.
The Rigos saw the change in their son’s reading and confidence, and wanted others, especially kids in low-income communities, to benefit from what LearnUp Centers has to offer. LearnUp is now in it’s 10th year of operation and have taught nearly 1000 students to read.

What is LearnUp’s unique solution to help struggling readers?
Many programs can teach kids to read. LearnUp is more effective and efficient—using one-on-one tutoring to teach struggling readers to read in about half the time as most other major reading programs. LearnUp integrates the best practices of the leading reading programs on the market (Orton, Linda Mood-Bell, Slingerland, Alphabetic Phonics, Reading Recovery, Whole Language) and combines them with the latest brain research and National Reading Panel recommendations to create a superior, systematic program that accelerates reading acquisition.
Does it really work?
Yes! On average, LearnUp students increased their word fluency by more than 50%, gaining over 40 words per minute in fluency and jumping 2.0 grade levels in reading—all in under 60 hours of tutoring.
Summer Impact
Many students experience the Summer Reading Slide, but your child doesn’t have to. Last summer, LearnUp worked with nearly 100 students with their reading. Here are some of their stories.
