Did You Receive a Compensatory Ed Notice From Your District?

Did you receive a Prior Written Notice (PWN) from your child’s school district?

Are you looking for a provider to fulfill your students’ compensatory education?

If so, this page will guide you step by step on how to learn about, engage, and enroll in the LearnUp reading program.

Here are the steps to getting started with LearnUp:

What is LearnUp’s goal for comp ed student?

When a student has fallen behind in reading, families and districts want results—not red tape. LearnUp helps both sides move forward with confidence. We partner with families, school districts, and advocates to deliver evidence-aligned, high-impact reading instruction that closes skill gaps quickly and sustainably.

Our goal is simple: to solve the problem by teaching children to read, not just fulfill the settlement.

LearnUp delivers breakthrough results for the students who need it most—especially for those students who have not learned to read with other programs.

To learn more about our Comp Ed approach to teaching reading see our Comp Ed page.

See below for a step by step outline of how to work with LearnUp.

Step 1:  Connect with LearnUp to have a conversation about your student.

Call: Partnership Program Manager Tara Giddings (510 292 9858) or email tara@learnupcenters.org

Step 2:  Fill out our registration/enrollment form.

The form will help us make sure we have the correct information we need to help your child.

Step 3:  Complete a FREE intake assessment and receive a reading report.

The assessment helps us to understand what reading issues your child is facing and if our program is a good fit for your child. The reading assessment report will help you understand what literacy challenges we are seeing in your child’s reading. It will also outline a customized reading program and goals for the time your child is enrolled in our program. It will also give you a sense of how many hours we believe it will take to complete our full reading program (your comp ed minutes may not be enough to complete the program).

Step 4:  Decide if LearnUp is the right fit for your child.

Most likely, you will be looking at a few different tutoring options. You will need to decide if LearnUp is the right fit for your child. If so, you will inform the district that you want to work with LearnUp. At the same time, LearnUp will begin the formal enrollment and scheduling process.

Step 5:  Sign Agreements.

The district will send LearnUp an Individual Service Agreement (ISA) for your child. Once signed, LearnUp can officially work with your child.

Step 6: Families sign our LearnUp agreement.

This agreement outlines the roles and responsibilities of LearnUp and the family/student.

Step 7: Schedule your child.

LearnUp will work with your family to schedule a time and tutor for the number of minutes in your ISA.

Things to Know

      1. Our sessions are 50 minutes long and start on the hour (e.g. 3:00 pm).
      2. Students attend 5 days a week (best practice in teaching children to read), at the same time of day (this is for tutor consistency)
      3. We can only offer the total number of sessions agreed to with the district.
      4. Missed sessions (canceled within 24 hours of the scheduled session) count against your ISA agreement. Canceled sessions can be rescheduled (canceled prior to 24 hours before a scheduled session).
      5. Sessions are held either in person at our clinic at Fillmore and Geary in San Francisco or virtually via Zoom.
      6. All sessions are 1:1 with a live tutor.
      7. Typically, comp ed sessions need to be held outside of school hours. We offer tutoring before and after school.
